Religious Discrimination
California law protects your right to practice your religion and be free from religious discrimination at work.
Understanding Religious Discrimination
Religious discrimination occurs when an employee is treated less favorably because of their religious beliefs, practices, or observances. This includes discrimination based on sincerely held religious beliefs, as well as discrimination for lack of religious belief.
Examples of Religious Discrimination
- Terminating employees because of religious beliefs or practices
- Denying reasonable accommodations for religious observances
- Making offensive comments about religious beliefs
- Harassment based on religious beliefs or attire
- Creating a hostile work environment based on religion
- Retaliation for requesting religious accommodations
- Refusing to hire candidates because of their religion
Religious Accommodations
Employers must provide reasonable accommodations for religious beliefs and practices unless doing so would create an undue hardship. This might include flexible scheduling for religious observances, dress code modifications, or providing a space to pray.
